Objectives of teaching science

The objectives of teaching science according to Tulasi & Rao (2004) and Yadav (1992) are given in the following on the basis of Bloom’ Taxonomy:
1.       Knowledge
 Through teaching science, students are expected to acquire knowledge about;
·         Natural phenomena,
·         Scientific terminology
·          Concepts and formulae
·         Modern inventions of science
·         Importance of animal and plant life to human being
·          Immediate environment
2.       Understanding
Students will be able;
·         Interpret charts, graphs, data, concept and so on
·         Illustrate scientific terms, concepts, facts, phenomena
·         Explain scientific facts, concepts and principles
·         Identify relationships between various facts, concepts and phenomena
·         Express themselves freely in various activities
3.       Application
The students through applying their prior and current learning will be able to;
·         Analyze the phenomena in the environment and other data given to him/her 
·         Explain giving reasons of various scientific phenomena
·         Formulate hypothesis from observations in order to test and draw conclusions
·         Find cause and effect relationships
·         Correctly infer from the observed data
·         Give new illustrations and patterns
·         Compare and contrast between different concepts, phenomena
4.       Skills
It is intended while teaching science that the students will;
·         Handle and assemble the given concrete objects, apparatus and instruments
·          Draw diagrams, sketches and illustrations
·         Construct things using the given low/no cost materials
·         Note correct reading from the instruments
·         Make calculations correctly
·         Draw inferences
5.       Interests
Providing the students with scientific hobbies and leisure activities, they will be curious and develop interest to
·         Take to some interesting scientific hobbies
·         Visit places of scientific interest
·         Undertake some science projects
·         Read scientific literature
·         Collect scientific specimen, photograph, biographic etc
·         Participate in science fair, exhibitions, clubs, debates, declamations contest and quiz etc
·         Appreciate the contributions of various scientists to human being

·         Realize the importance of science in daily life
