Attention Makes a Difference In Language Learning
Attention plays a vital role in language learning, particularly among young children. It is my personal experience that I taught a language subject in grade five for almost more than two months. During this period I took two classroom tests on a monthly basis. I observed that those students whose attention I succeeded to get paid performed well than those who paid less attention to my teaching. The analysis of this situation reveals that an important aspect of effective teaching is to be able to get students’ attention paid towards the teaching.

The techniques helpful in gaining students’ attention are keeping eye contact throughout the teaching, moving around the rows of students, focusing by taking names, and non-verbal communication of those students who are noisemakers in classroom teaching. Applying these techniques makes young students alert throughout the teaching. Although, getting paid students’ attention is one of the difficult things in young students during teaching. One thing that I did was make students’ practice their learning soon after the teaching. I observed that the students who paid less attention towards the teaching faced difficulty in practice work and they tried to get help from the performing students. This is why motivation among the learners is considered an important factor in effective teaching.

Many effective teachers take the help of audio-video aids in teaching to motivate students for gaining their attention. From the results of both the academic tests, I found that the students who paid attention to the teaching to a fairly good amount achieved fairly well in those tests. The students who paid for a longer time during teaching received high marks on both the tests. On the other hand, those students who paid less attention could not achieve well even making mistakes in small things which could be corrected if given a little amount of attention during teaching. Therefore, if teachers want to be effective in their teaching need to keep in mind to apply meaningful techniques to be able to succeed in getting paid students’ attention in their teaching.
