Existentialism and Curriculum |
Existentialists
believe that existence is neither new nor old because it existed, it exists and
it will exist. They believe in the self-realization
of the individual. According to existentialism, education aims to produce independent
learners and facilitate them to make their own choices thus developing individuality among the learners.
Curriculum
is about teaching various subjects of art, science, and humanities but the focus
is more on humanities because the education of entire humanity is represented in an
individual. Existentialism suggests
child-centered approach be applied as a method of teaching in the classroom. Total
freedom is given to the learner under the guidance of the teacher.
The teacher is the main pillar of the entire
educational process. As a guide, the teacher should help the students towards the realization
of the self of the learners. The teacher does not establish any rule or
ridicule, demoralize or humiliate learner. On the other hand, learners are most
important and independent to realize themself. In existentialism, the learner
is free to decide his/her own choices.
