A Breif Note Historical Research

Historical Research: A way too involves studying, understanding, and interpreting events that occurred in the past. The purpose behind historical research is to get informed and explore insights from the phenomena related to persons or incidents that happened in the past. Historical research requires interpretation of the data going beyond collecting simple factual information.

The history focuses on particular persons, important social issues, and linkages between the old and new incidents. Sometimes, some historical researchers aim to reinterpret the prior historical work attempting to revise existing understanding and replacing it with newly constructed understanding in relation to the circumstances.

In historical research, the researcher work with the data that already existed except when it needs to interview any person who is an eyewitness of an event. Sometimes, in historical research, the researcher collects and interprets quantitative data as required to look into the numbers. However, the main attention in historical research is paid to the interpretation of data in the form of diaries, logbooks, registers, and other such documents.

There are two sources of data in historical research such as primary sources and secondary sources. Firsthand information such as the report by a person being eye witness and original work recorded by the person him/herself about what had happened are considered as primary sources while reports and information provided by referencing are termed as secondary sources. In historical research, it is difficult to get information from primary sources. If fond some recorded work that there may be the questions of authenticity of that work.

External criticism and internal criticism are the ways to assess and authenticate the data. External criticism refers to the questions such as; were the diary, logs, or other stuff written by the same person whose name has been written on them? Internal criticism examines the worth or truthfulness of the data by asking questions such as; is the information given unbiased?

Are important information has been deleted or unimportant information have been added? Is the work based on exaggeration? If historical research needs to be conducted to compare the education system before and during British rule in Sub-continent, the following major sources of data will be consulted.

For validation purposes, the reforms made by different emperors will be matched with the other records such as journal articles, reflective notes of educationists of that time so that views similar and different will be helpful to evaluate to determining internal and external validity.

Books on reforms in education brought about by British rule

Similar to the books on histories of the emperor, the books and published material related to the reforms in education by the British Government may also be used as a source of data.
