There are two sources of data in historical research
such as primary sources and secondary sources. Firsthand information such as
the report by a person being eye witness and original work recorded by the person
him/herself about what had happened are considered as primary sources while
reports and information provided by referencing are termed as secondary sources.
In historical research, it is difficult to get information from primary
sources. If fond some recorded work that there may be the questions of
authenticity of that work.
External criticism and internal criticism are the ways to assess and authenticate the data. External criticism refers to the questions such as; were the diary, logs, or other stuff written by the same person whose name has been written on them? Internal criticism examines the worth or truthfulness of the data by asking questions such as; is the information given unbiased?
Are important information has been deleted or unimportant information have been added? Is the work based on exaggeration? If historical research needs to be conducted to compare the education system before and during British rule in Sub-continent, the following major sources of data will be consulted.
Newspapers, Magazines, and research journals of ancient
times from libraries
Newspapers, magazines, research journals particularly
education-related newspapers of the era before and during British rule will be
a source of data for conducting historical research. Articles written about
the education systems, strengths, and weaknesses of the education system of
those times will give the data related to the topic. For authenticity and
internal and external validity, the views of different writers in different
newspapers, magazines, and journals will be analyzed.
Books are written on education before and during British
rule
Different education-related books written by various
authors before and during British rule in Sub-continent will be consulted as
resources of data. Analyzing various books in terms of similar and varying
ideas related to the educational processes written by different authors will
indicate the validity of the information given in the books related to
education system.
Records in ancient universities, colleges, and schools
Records in the form of logbooks, notes during
meetings and policy documents from the universities, colleges, schools and
education centers may serve as a source of data. Previously conducted historical
research related to the ancient education system of the time before and during
the British period in Sub-continent will also be a secondary source of data to
be analyzed and interpreted.
History books on services of Mughal emperors
Books are written on the history of various emperors by various historians
can be consulted to collect data to be analyzed and interpreted where
particularly reforms related to education have been mentioned. For validation
purposes, the reforms made by different emperors will be matched with the other
records such as journal articles, reflective notes of educationists of that
time so that views similar and different will be helpful to evaluate to
determining internal and external validity.
Books on reforms in education brought about by British rule
Similar to the books on histories of the emperor, the books and
published material related to the reforms in education by the British Government
may also be used as a source of data.
Interview of historians of the current era
Those people who are involved in writing about the histories related to
education may be interviewed so that their analysis and interpretations will be
used as secondary data sources. Such types of interviews may also serve as the tool
to validate the previously written books and other published materials.
